ON-CAMPUS STAFFING AGENCY

Why do we need an On-Campus Staffing Agency?

Departments such as Event Services, Athletics, Campus Recreation, and Dining Services, have a distinct need for large numbers of employees, at sporadic times throughout the year. They often have difficulty staffing these positions, and find themselves looking at two options:

  • They can keep many students on staff whether they currently have work available or not.
  • They can recruit large numbers of students during busy times throughout the year.

Multiple discussions indicated that a staffing agency was needed on campus. The On-Campus Staffing Agency is housed in Career Services. Whether you need one student or 20, Career Services can help.

Benefits

  • More students are able to work on campus.
  • Your department gets the help they need.

Examples of when to use the staffing agency

  • You have a project that needs to be completed and you never have enough time to finish it.
  • You have a big event coming up and need more employees than usual.
  • Your student can’t come to work (i.e., sick or family emergency) and you need someone to cover their shift for the day, the week, or longer.
  • Anytime you need additional people.

Process

  • Fill out the “Student Employee Request Form”.
  • Cheryl Brandt (Career Services Employer Specialist) will contact you to confirm details.
  • Cheryl contacts the student employees and makes arrangements.
  • The student employees show up at your worksite and do a fabulous job.
  • You submit hours for the student employees to Cheryl.
    • Please include: Student Name, D#, hours worked. (Example)
  • Cheryl submits information to payroll.
  • Cheryl will fill out an internal billing and send it to you.

Cost to your department

  • The cost of hiring the students will come out of your budget.
  • Initially, the student is paid from a Career Services budget. Following the employment, an interdepartmental transfer will be initiated from Career Services to your department.
  • Students must be paid at a rate of $12 per hour.
  • Departments will receive a 25% markup for utilizing the staffing agency.
    • Reference Point: Industry staffing agencies vary from 35% to 100% based on a variety of factors. Kelly Services, a well-known staffing agency in St. George, averages a markup of 40%.
